Tandanya is Australia’s oldest Aboriginal-owned and operated multidisciplinary cultural centre, dedicated to celebrating and sharing the richness of First Nations arts, culture and storytelling. Since opening in 1989, it has played a vital role in Adelaide’s cultural landscape, presenting exhibitions, performances, music, dance and community programs that foster deeper understanding and connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The centre takes its name from the Kaurna word Tarndanya, meaning “place of the Red Kangaroo”, acknowledging the Traditional Owners and the cultural significance of the land on which it stands.
More than a gallery, Tandanya is a place of creativity, knowledge and cultural exchange. Through contemporary and traditional artistic practice, it provides a platform for First Nations artists and communities while inviting visitors to engage with the world’s oldest continuing living cultures. It remains one of Adelaide’s most significant cultural institutions and an essential part of the East End’s identity.
