Constructed in 1927 as the new headquarters for Charlick Brothers, 265–267 Rundle Street reflects the remarkable growth of one of South Australia’s most influential family businesses. Founded by Robert Charlick in the East End Produce Market in the early 1870s, the company grew from a small market shed into one of Adelaide’s leading grocery and produce merchants, with the new building serving as its central office for wholesale and country operations.
Designed by architect Reginald Short in a restrained Inter-War Classical style, the substantial three-storey building became a prominent landmark overlooking Rundle Street and Ebenezer Place. In 1996, the building underwent a comprehensive refurbishment that restored its heritage character while adapting it for modern commercial use, before being sensitively extended with two additional setback levels in 2011. Today, the Charlicks Building remains one of the East End’s most recognisable landmarks, celebrating both the precinct’s commercial heritage and its ongoing evolution.
