Market of Plenty
Before supermarkets and refrigerated supply chains, the East End Produce Market was where South Australia came to life each morning. From the 1860s, horse-drawn carts and wagons converged on East Terrace, carrying the state’s freshest fruit, vegetables and produce into a bustling marketplace that fed generations of South Australians.
When the market closed in 1987, it marked the end of more than a century of tradition, trade and community. Photographer Tim Gladdis was there to document its final days, capturing not only the buildings and barrows, but the people whose lives shaped the market’s enduring character. Buyers and sellers, laden trucks, ornate facades and fleeting everyday moments come together to preserve the spirit of a place that had long been the beating heart of the East End.
