Time and Place

Artist
Dave Court & Shane Mankitya Cook

Location
Tavistock Lane, Adelaide

Created by Adelaide artists Dave Court and Shane Mankitya Cook in 2023, Time and Place is a vibrant large-scale mural celebrating the stories, people and places that define the East End. Commissioned by the City of Adelaide as part of the Reignite Adelaide program in partnership with Guildhouse, the artwork spans multiple building facades in Tavistock Lane, weaving together abstract forms, local landmarks and references to Country into a single immersive composition.

The mural rewards closer inspection, with each element revealing a connection to its surroundings. A takeaway pizza box pays tribute to the long-standing Amalfi restaurant, a stylised camera references Ted’s Cameras, while the Adelaide Hills and city skyline merge into the urban landscape. Shane Cook’s contribution incorporates his family totem, the Tawny Frogmouth, alongside Aboriginal motifs that acknowledge movement, culture and Country. Threading throughout the work is Dave Court’s signature abstract “spaghetti strand”, visually linking the precinct’s architecture, businesses and community into one continuous story.

The mural also embraces digital innovation through augmented reality. By scanning selected sections with the Artivive app, visitors can watch elements of the artwork animate before their eyes, adding another layer of discovery to a work that reflects both the East End’s creative heritage and its ongoing evolution.
