Created by Adelaide-born, internationally renowned artist Jimmy C (James Cochran), Ophelia is one of the East End’s most recognisable works of public art. Painted in 2017, the mural showcases the artist’s signature pointillist technique, where thousands of vibrant layers of sprayed colour create a portrait that appears to shift and come alive as it is viewed from different angles.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s tragic heroine, the artwork explores themes of beauty, emotion and transformation through a contemporary street art lens. Rich in movement and colour, Ophelia demonstrates Jimmy C’s distinctive ability to blend classical portraiture with modern urban expression, creating a work that rewards both passing glances and closer inspection. Positioned at the entrance to Vardon Avenue, it has become a landmark within Adelaide’s celebrated street art landscape.
