Joff Chappel’s Mural

Artist
Nick Phillips

Location
Sym Choon Lane, Adelaide

Painted by Adelaide artist Nick Phillips in 2021, this striking portrait honours the late Joff Chappel, one of the East End’s most recognisable personalities. Together with his partner, Razak Mohammed, Chappel transformed the legendary Miss Gladys Sym Choon boutique into an Adelaide fashion institution, becoming the welcoming face of the store for more than three decades. Following his passing in 2020, the mural was created as a lasting tribute to his contribution to the precinct and the city’s creative community.

Positioned in Sym Choon Lane, the artwork celebrates not only Chappel’s legacy in Adelaide fashion, but also the vibrant character and individuality he brought to the East End. Rendered in Phillips’ distinctive photorealistic style, the mural captures Joff’s warmth and unmistakable presence, ensuring one of the precinct’s most beloved identities remains a familiar face within the streets he helped shape.
