Created by Adelaide artist and designer Matt Stuckey in 2016, EAST is a bold typographic mural that celebrates the history and identity of Adelaide’s East End. Commissioned by Maras Group, the site-specific work transforms a vast concrete wall into a contemporary landmark, with the word “EAST” acting as both a striking visual statement and a simple marker of place.
The mural draws inspiration from the precinct’s former life as the East End Produce Markets. Looking to the carved stone reliefs that still adorn many of the surrounding heritage buildings, Stuckey reinterpreted the fruit and vegetables once traded here as a series of bold geometric forms. Each colour within the composition has been carefully matched to a different piece of produce, creating an abstract visual language that connects the precinct’s commercial past with its contemporary creative identity.
Created using nothing more than a ruler, masking tape, chalk and paint, the mural demonstrates Stuckey’s meticulous approach to large-scale public art. Its clean lines and vibrant palette offer a modern interpretation of the East End’s rich market heritage, celebrating the stories embedded within the precinct’s architecture while creating an unmistakable sense of arrival.
